Context
For many African diaspora young people in Australia, social media is not extra. It is where they find people like them, language for what they have always felt, and a version of Black life that school and mainstream media rarely offer.
I co-authored this piece for The Conversation on how the under-16 ban could close that off.
What I do
- Drew on research with African diaspora youth about identity, belonging and where they actually learn culture.
- Argued that a blanket ban lands hardest on the young people who already have the fewest other places to be seen.
