The mis/non-representation of African cultures in Australian schools

Context

Students from the African diaspora in Australia often find that their voices are missing from school. So are their images, histories and lives in what gets taught.

I co-authored this paper with Melanie Baak, Shaza Hamed, Efon Luwala and Jeanne Munyonge for ReConnectEd. The title comes from a student: not one day did I ever learn anything about African heritage or cultures.

What I do

  • Wrote from qualitative research with African-Australian young people.
  • Made the case that listening means changing what is on the page, not only hearing the interview.
